Introduction:

The new TIEKE was officially launched on May 1, 1998 when the functions and the personnel of the previous TIEKE were combined with FDCA, the Finnish Data Communication Association and TELMO, the Finnish Interactive Network Services. The three associations had been working in close partnership and sharing both administration and premises since 1991. The merger was ratified in Council Meetings by all three associations.

On the event of the merger, TIEKE's Managing Director, Dr. Aatto J. Repo stated: "As a result of the merger the renewed TIEKE is in the position to define and implement its goals and objectives with increased efficiency. TIEKE is now also capable of participating in both domestic and international projects in a more coordinated manner."

The primary mission of TIEKE is to serve its members and associates by performing as a neutral and non-profit forum in the development of the Finnish Information Society at-large.

The main functions of the renewed TIEKE now include:

  • Initiation and coordination of selected development projects within the ICT industry
  • Generation of an IT cluster together with domestic and international partners, thus promoting networking at all levels of IT industry
  • Development of trade procedures in both domestic and international cooperation, as a major Finnish player on that arena
  • Participation in the development of electronic data interchange and UN/EDIFACT, and electronic commerce; promotion of the use of IT between organizations and in public access services
  • Participation in the standardization of information and communications technologies at national, European and international levels; TIEKE's role in the formal standardization is delegated by the Finnish Standardization Association, SFS
  • Production of interactive information services for business companies, public administration and private citizens alike, and delivery of IT news and publication services as a member of a European consortium
  • Further development of the Computer Driver's Licence (CDL), originated at TIEKE and now also available on an international basis.

The key approach in all current TIEKE missions is to cultivate its expertise in networking with its members and other partners. TIEKE carries out its work in close cooperation with providers of information technology and telecommunications products and services, various businesses, government, public agencies and municipalities, research and development institutions, and other domestic and international bodies and cooperative parties.

With its achievements in the past, with its understanding of global issues of today, and with its visions for the future, TIEKE aims at linking together various players in the society.
