On 26th March 1998 the European Commission hosted a workshop for Centres of Competence in Electronic Commerce. Such centres provide information about electronic commerce and assist small- and medium-sized enterprises. They do this in a variety of ways. Some are focused on awareness creation, others also address electronic commerce R&D and implementation. Some have a commercial mission, others work on a not-for-profit basis.

The workshop participants were keen to see a platform of such Centres established to share best practise and to have regular workshops an conferences. These web pages are a result of that desire to work closer together.
At a subsequent meeting in Utrecht, 19th June 1998, hosted by Media Plaza, participants agreed to work towards formalising the Network and that a small working party would meet in September 1998 to develop proposals. A further full meeting of the Network will be held in Paris in November 1998.
