Woolton Hill is a quiet country village in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but close to the busy market town of Newbury and with excellent road and rail links. Heathrow about 40 minutes by car, or by railair link about one hour fifteen minutes. Central London one hour or less by train. Our local pub (five or six minutes walk) serves good food in a convivial local village pub environment. Whether your visit is for work or pleasure you will be comfortable and welcome here.
Newbury is one of England's most prosperous towns, headquarters of Vodafone-Airtouch - the world's largest mobile communications company - and a base for many hi tech companies as well as the traditional local activities of farming and horse racing, breeding and training. Newbury's Spring Festival is a major musical event. The Watermill Theatre stages excellent dramatic productions.
Just five minutes drive from Tile Barn House is Highclere Castle, one of England's most important Victorian stately homes, seat of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. Lord Carnarvon's late father was racing manager to Her Majesty the Queen; his great grandfather financed and led the expedition that found the tomb of Tutankahmun, and the Castle has an interesting collection of Egyptian artefacts.
Local churches offer a variety of forms of worship. There is a friendly village stores and post office, plus a pub that serves good food. Newbury Library provides Cybercafe facilities at no charge (Tile Barn House has a wireless broadband connection, use is included in our standard rates).
Further afield, but easily reached from Newbury are:
- Winchester - the former capital of England, whose magnificent Cathedral houses the tombs of early English Kings, and the Great Hall, containing the famous Round Table of England.
- The dreaming spires of Oxford
- Prehistoric monuments at Stonehenge and Avebury - where one can wander among the ancient stones that form a great circle around and through the village
- Hungerford, famous for its many antique shops
- Marlborough, with its wide Georgian high street, the college and attractive shopping and eating
- Watership Down - made famous by Douglas Adams' book, the film and various TV productions.
For walkers, the Wayfarers' Walk passes close by, running along ridges that give dramatic views, and across Watership Down. Hampshire's famous trout rivers, the Test and the Avon, are within less than an hour's drive. The re-opened Kennet and Avon Canal runs through Newbury and close to Woolton Hill on its route from the Thames to Bristol.
