How to find Tile Barn House:

Here we provide written directions from M4 London or Bristol/A34 Oxford, Newbury Racecourse, Newbury Town Centre, Basingstoke, and M3 London/A34 Winchester.

From M4 (London or Bristol) and A34 (from Oxford and the North)

(seven or eight minutes from M4/A34 junction)

From M4/A34 junction take A34 Southbound signed for Winchester (right hand two lanes).

Ignore the Newbury exits and continue on A34, passing the A4 exit then take the next exit, signed for Highclere and Wash Common, A343. The exit is shortly after passing the Hampshire county sign. Note that the exit signs are close to the exits on this part of A34 and the slip roads are sharply curved - approach the exit with care.

Turn right on A343, signed for Highclere.

After one mile turn right, signed for Woolton Hill and Kintbury.

After 400 yards you will see a turning to the right, signed for Broad Layings and The Rampant Cat (pub). You DO NOT take this turning but immediately past it (effectively straight ahead as you approach the junction) is the entrance to a private road, with a white sign: "Tile Barn - No Public Right Of Way". Turn into this private road (an unmade track). After a further 400 yards you will see, straight ahead, a large, three-storey Victorian house (the only three-storey house in the estate). Tile Barn House is the further part of this, please park close to the hedge and the post and rail fence which you will see ahead of you. Please use the nearest entrance, there is a house sign next to the door.

From Newbury Racecourse:

(ten minutes drive)

From the racecourse follow signs for Newbury Town Centre. On reaching the A339 go straight ahead at the roundabout into St John's Road (signed for Wash Common) (A343). Note that in Newbury the road direction signs for Andover send you down the A339 towards Winchester; ignore these and look for St John's Road (A343)! Go straight ahead at the St John's roundabout into Andover Road (A343) and again straight on at a pair of mini-roundabouts, and continue on A343 until leaving the built up area. The road now passes under the A34 trunk road. After passing under A34 continue on Andover Road (A343) for a further mile then turn right, signed for Woolton Hill and Kintbury.

From Newbury Town Centre:

(ten minutes drive)

Leave the Town Centre and join A339 dual carriageway Southbound (signed for Winchester and Basingstoke). At the Burger King roundabout turn right into St John's Road A343, signed for Wash Common.

Note that in Newbury the road direction signs for Andover send you down the A339 towards Winchester; ignore these and look for St John's Road!

From Basingstoke via A339

(About 20-25 minutes)

Take A339 and stay on this road past Kingsclere, through Headley village and past New Greenham Business Park. At the next major roundabout turn left onto A4640, signed for Winchester - you will see the Swan pub on your left immediately after joining A4640. Continue on A4640 till you reach its junction with the A34. Join A34 Northbound (signed for Oxford) and then take the next exit, onto A343, signed for Highclere and Wash Common. Note that the exit signs are close to the exits on this part of A34 and the slip roads are sharply curved - approach the exit with care. It is at the foot of a long downhill stretch.

Turn right on A343, signed for Highclere.

After one mile turn right, signed for Woolton Hill and Kintbury.

From M3 (London) and Basingstoke via A303/A34 and from Winchester and the South Coast

(Twenty minutes from Winchester North M3/A34 junction)
(From Basingstoke this is a slightly longer drive but avoids the busy A339)

From M3 South/Westbound after passing Basingstoke take the A303, signed for Andover, and then turn North onto A34, signed for Newbury and Oxford. (Alternatively you can turn off at Basingstoke and follow A339 as above, which is a little shorter in distance but may be a longer journey time. The route below is entirely on dual carriageway to within a mile of Tile Barn House.)
From M3 Northbound (from Coastal ports, New Forest) stay on M£ past Winchester then follow signs for Newbury and Oxford (A34)

On A34 Northbound continue past the signs for Beacon Hill/Highclere Castle and past the sign for Tothill Services/Newbury and take the next exit onto A343, signed for Highclere and Wash Common. Note that the exit signs are close to the exits on this part of A34 and the slip roads are sharply curved - approach the exit with care. It is at the foot of a long downhill stretch.
