In order to form the Information Society in Latvia and to integrate Latvia into the global process, the National Program Informatics has been elaborated according to the directives of the Cabinet of Minister’s in 1997-1998. A number of interrelated economic, political and social objectives will be achieved through the implementation of the program.

The program includes both macrolevel measures (a policy for development of the country) and micro-level measures (a number of applications and projects). The processing of various types of information, the provision of the   universal service are considered  the main components of the program. A number of bounded up informative, communication, normative, knowledge and applied subprograms are directed at the development of the  service as its separate components in the country as well as the ensuring the interoperability of information and telecommunications services at the intrnational level.
