Best Site Award for European Telework OnlineThe European Telework Online web site (http://www.eto.org.uk) has been rated one of Europe's best sites, achieving second prize in a web sites review undertaken for the Europe-Mediterranean Internet Conference and Exhibition which was held by the European Commission and the Government of Cyprus on 4-7 March 1998. With more than one thousand pages of information and advice relating to telework, teletrade and telecooperation, together with a range of discussion facilities and databases, the ETO site is widely recognised as the world's leading web site. It is also the hub of a network of linked sites in 19 countries, enabling Europeans and others to learn about the Information Society and its applications in many different languages and contexts. Owned and operated by Management Technology Associates as a free service for Governments, employers, unions, teleworkers and technology suppliers, the site was established in 1996 and handles more than 50,000 information requests per month from more than 60 countries. The site is supported by the European Telework Development initiative (ETD - a project in the European Commission's ACTS programme), for which it is the home web site, and by more than twenty volunteers who manage particular sections under the guidance of webmaster Ian Simmins of Carlyle Information Services. Technology support is provided by Loud-n-Clear Ltd, a UK based specialist in effective web site design and implementation. Through the support of ETD, the site has provided "incubator" facilities for several market initiatives, including the Information Society disAbilities Challenge (ISdAC) and the European Association for Community Networking (EACN). A number of new projects have been started by people and organisations who have met through the site's networking and interactive facilities, and the site will act as an information exchange during the build up to Europe's 14 Billion ECU Fifth Framework Programme, expected to be launched this year.
