1. In some countries the incidence of self employment fairly closely matches the proportion of people who express a preference for it - UK, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Greece - and these countrues are also among those where self-employment is most common.
2. In some countries there is a signifant gap between practice and preference, notably in France, Denmark, Sweden Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Most of these countries have relatively highly organised and regulated labour markets. This appears to bear out the contention of the ETD national coordinators that existing labour laws and practices are too much oriented to "conventional employment" and fail to support the needs and aspirations of those who are, or would like to be, self employed.
3. Other information presented at Aarhus suggested a significant general level of dissatisfaction with today's labour market organisation and practice - we await publication of the full report with interest!
