TeleCottages Wales held its AGM yesterday (14th) at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth, and this was followed by a full afternoon in the Computer Science dept, who had made available a dozen Sun Stations running Unix and X-Windows. These had MBone internet link software installed, and we were able to link to Brussels and other sites in London and Newfoundland for a videoconference with European Project Partners. This was astounding, we were able to hear full high-quality audio and see rather freeze-frame pictures from all sites simultaneously, and share a realtime whiteboard. The proceedings were viewed by sites in Scotland, Japan, Spain and America. Afterwards we linked to NASA, who transmit their proceedings via MBone 24 hours a day, with very clear moving images and audio from the Mere/Atlantic link HQ. And later we were able to browse the Web with Netscape, running very fast and clear over the 34 mbs link.
The usual AGM routines will be followed by lunch at the Clubhouse.
The afternoon sessions will include a presentation on TeleMart, an EU-funded Telematics Applications Programme project designed to market teleworkers to meet global information need. TCW is a main partner in the project, with help from the Welsh Development Agency.
An attempt will be made to telelink to the TeleMart Project Partners in Greece, Newfoundland, France and Ireland, not forgetting Brussels where the signing of the TeleMart contract will take place.
This telelink will take the form of a multi-site many-to-many videoconference/whiteboarding link using a 2 Mbit SuperJanet link onto the superhighway, and the MBone Unix software that enables broadband links without jamming up the net. We pray for a power-cut free afternoon!
