Latest Updates - 15th November

Here are some recent updates:

News Update - Weekend November 11-12

With the Vienna and Rome events closing on Friday last, and London Telework 95 set to begin on Tuesday, November 14, we're at the midway stage of the first European Telework Week.

Across Europe, teleworkers, telecommuters, researchers, businessmen and women, trade unionists, politicians and others have been swapping ideas, experiences and knowledge.

The week has caught the imagination of Europe's media, with special television broadcasts across all 15 member states, in all national languages, being produced by EuroNews, the French-based subscription channel.

We spoke with Jacoma Mazzone, Chief Editor of EuroNews, and asked him why he had decided to run six spots on ETW over a 16 hour broadcast period.

"First, it's of broad interest to our viewers. Teleworking is something which appeals to many different workers and businesses in all of Europe. So, for us, it's a natural topic to cover.

Secondly, I happen to believe passionately in teleworking. Euro News itself is a good example of how a very centralised head office, which we have here in Ecully, outside Lyon, with all our translators, could adopt teleworking without too much pain. We could then have our translators working from their home countries, rather than having to put in long shifts here. I'd quite like to try it myself!"

EuroNews has carried items on teleworking in the past, but they have tended to be sectional items. Now, Mr Mazzone believes teleworking has managed to raise its profile through the week so far, and he has asked for a regular supply of features and news items from us to update viewers as teleworking broadens its reach.

In the print media, The European's Business Editor Chris Butler wrote an extended news story on the event last week and is planning a highlights report next Thursday.

"The great thing about European Telework Week is that it's addressing exactly the same challenge we have - to try and find a mix of news, views and interest for many nationalities. It's exciting just how many events have been organised and a great opportunity for us to report on a technology which can be of real business and personal benefit."

There is also a series of links from the ETW homepage site in the UK to the Spanish chain.

Germany/Netherlands:

Kitty de Bruin, Digital's Teleworking Project Manager based in Utrecht, Holland, is having a busy weekend, flying to Bremen in Germany for several events including a press conference during the COMBIT 95 event which begins tomorrow (Sunday). Kitty then heads back to Holland for appearances in Utrecht and Amsterdam , including the National Telework Awards (which will be broadcast live on Dutch national TV) on Thursday November 16.

France:

Ireland

If you have noticed an uncommonly quiet period of messaging in the TWEURO Forum of CompuServe, it's because many of the 6,000 plus members are too busy working on events this weekend!

Among the System Operators, the volunteers who keep the Forum running and have helped many to get started on the teleworking trail, Paddy Moindrot (Wales) and Imogen Bertin (Cork) have joined forces in Dublin for the two-day seminar "Opportunities for Irish Teleworking", which has been organised by the National College for Industrial Relations.

Rest of the Week

We'll keep you updated on pan-European coverage over the next week and will be uploading news and information items each day for the next week.

Remember, if you attend any of the many events, we'd like to hear from you, what you discover, what you find good and bad about all or any of the events.

For CompuServe subscribers, send your messages to GO TWEURO, section 11 and for web surfers, http://www.mtanet.co.uk/etw.htm

News of the Day

European Telework Week starts with major BT survey of commuters

Europe's first ever Telework Week began earlier this week in Vienna, with the start of a four day conference hosted by the European Commission. Over the next few days, there will be many large and small events in every member state of the EU, ranging from simple Internet messaging to live multi-site videoconferencing debates and national television broadcasts. As the week begins, the UK's biggest telephone company, BT, has published this morning the results of a special survey - covering commuters attitudes to the possibilities of teleworking. Not surprisingly, the majority of people interviewed would like to have the option of teleworking, at least some of the time, and escaping the chore of daily travel to and from the office, factory or other workplace.
