Telework and the Work Environment

Enhancement of the Health and Safety at Work contribution to telework

Helsinki
13-14 November 1995

organized by the European Commission, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) and the Finnish Ministry of Labour

in collaboration with the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions

with the support of Catral, Helsinki Telephone Company Ltd. and The Pohjola Group

Throughout the world, production systems, consumption patterns and methods of organising work are undergoing radical changes. This is already affecting all aspects of working life in a way comparable with the Industrial Revolution. Work will be transformed by new flexibility in working hours, the work place itself and in terms of contract and payment.

At the European Summit in Copenhagen in June 1993, the President of the European Commission highlighted the importance of creating a "common information space" within which decentralized economic activity can develop through interactions of small businesses.

Teleworking, using telecommunications outside a traditional office environment, was identified as one of the main contributors to European economic and social development and cohesion. The need to assess the impact of telework on key social issues (labour law and social security) and health and safety at work was recognized. Actions to stimulate telework have been taken on regional, national and European levels in both the public and the private sector. In June 1993 the European Commission decided on a set of actions to stimulate transborder telework, and sponsored a first set of expert workshops on "new concepts of work in a knowledge society". This seminar focuses on the health and safety at work aspects of telework.

The seminar will bring together health and safety at work specialists, industrialists, union representatives, telework pioneers and researchers, from the European Union and Eastern Central Europe, interested in a changing world of work.
