European Telework Week

November 9th - 16th 1995

The European Commission is co-ordinating and sponsoring a "European Telework Week" in mid November 1995. The aim is to promote the use of more flexible working practices in the context of the European Policies growth, competitiveness and employment; and to encourage wider use of European infrastructure.

The core "events" of the week will be the Telework '95 Conference in Rome (9-10/ 11/95), the Telework '95 Exhibition in the Barbican, London (14-16/11/95), and the Conference on "a day in the Information Society" in Vienna (6-9/11/95), which will bring together National Hosts and projects from the new EU ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) Programme.

The success of the week will, however, depend on the concentration of a very large number of local, regional and national activities into the week so that the cumulative effect is of major public interest.

These events will take the focus of television, radio and newspaper debates, articles and linked advertising campaigns; local and regional seminars, exhibition and demonstrations; and regional campaigns to encourage as many people as possible to experiment with teleworking for a day on the week (with the agreement of their employers !)

Notes for Editors:

European Telework Week : 9 - 16 November 1995

In 1995, there are an estimated 1,25 million regular Teleworkers in Europe, and it is expected this could rise to 10 million by the end of this decade.

European Telework Week will give Europeans the opportunity to see, to experience and share in the demonstrable benefits that can be derived from greater uptake of Telework.

There will be a week of events across Europe which will focus attention on Telework and its contribution to the Information Society.

These events will consist of :
Conferences
Telework '95 - Rome 9-10/11/95
Telework '95 - London 14-16/11/95
Vienna 6-9/11/95

local seminars; local, national and international media events; campaigns to encourage the maximum number of people in Europe to experiment with Telework.

The week will emphasise the positive role of Telework in not only contributing to the economic competitiveness of European enterprises but also to the quality of life of its citizens, and its potential in creating work opportunities.

Major suppliers of telecommunications services and IT equipment will co-operate with Governments, Telework and SME associations, and major companies to provide highly visible demonstrations of the benefits of Teleworking as well as showing a commitment to further the broader uptake of Telework.

Interest in this event has already been expressed by most of the telecommunications suppliers, telework associations, and some of the most influential users across Europe. A major show of support from European industry and employers, will reinforce the significant public interest in this topic.
