Germany (West) has 3.6m home offices while the UK and France have 2.2m and 2.1m respectively. Italy has the most small companies, with over a million more than Germany (West).

And Also ...

A survey was conducted by the ISDN Research Commission of the state of North-Rhein Westphalen in November 1994.

1200 enterprises out of selected sectors (no mention which ), sized between 10 and 500 employees have been identified and telephone interviews were conducted with selected 412 companies and following has been concluded:

• 31% of interviewed exterprises have potential for telework
• out of 31.000 companies with 10-500 employeees in NRW and in selected sectors 9.600 companies are potential teleworking companies
• 9.5% jobs out of 1.1 million in these companies are potential teleworking jobs
• potential for teleworking in NRW is estimated at 99.000 jobs

The commission emphasises that these are rather careful estimates and real potential may be actually higher.

To translate this figure to whole Garmany ( NRW is 25% of it ) I would multiply it by at least 3, this would mean that present potential in Germany alone is at 300.000 level.

This corresponds nicely with the figure out of other survey that estimates this potential at 2.000.000 by the end of century. On the other end, very optimistic figure from Deutsche Telekom AG has been published recently, it was in 10.000.000 region !
