European Telework Development (ETD)
ETD and Suppliers of Products and Services
The ETD Initiative seeks to work with suppliers of all the
products and services needed for the successful development of the Information
Society, including:
- Computers and computer systems for the office, industry,
schools and homes;
- Telecommunications networks and services;
- Internet and other public and private networking services;
- Software and services supporting telework, teletrade
(electronic commerce) and telecooperation (interpersonal and group networking);
- Support services and facilities such as telecentres
and telecottages, electronic commerce services, online directory services,
online information services.
Our aim is to assist in four main ways:
- by helping suppliers to understand and respond to
the market opportunities represented by telework, teletrade
and telecooperation (TTT);
- by working alongside suppliers and others (including
the European Commission, Member States' Governments and public sector agencies)
to increase awareness and take up of the relevant technologies and applications;
- by promoting effective and beneficial use of the
technologies and applications and making successful examples more widely
known;
and
- by assisting suppliers to identify barriers to successful
take up, alerting them to relevant regulatory and legal
proposals and issues and assisting them to participate effectively
in public programmes and policy initiatives.
Market Development Interest Group
The Initiative is forming a Market Development Interest Group for suppliers
of relevant technologies, products and services. The Interest Group will
work at European level with the European Commission and other interested
parties and at national level with appropriate Government agencies and
communities
of interest. European Telework Week
(3 - 10 November 1997) is an example of the high profile market development
activities through which ETD can assist members of the Interest Group to
leverage the support of the European Commission and national activists.
Market Model and Market Information
Effective marketing depends on accurate and timely information. ETD is developing
a market model of the European market for telework, teletrade and telecooperation
and collecting comparative market data from each European country to provide
a sound basis for market development.
Electronic Commerce - Memorandum of Understanding
ETD is providing website and other support facilities for signatories to
the European Commission's Memorandum
of Understanding on Open Access to Electronic Commerce.
Examples of How ETD is helping Suppliers
Here are some of the ways ETD has already supported suppliers in our first
few months of operation:
- Support to European Telework
Week - in 1996 ETD provided promotional support to major conferences
in Vienna, Bonn and London and to national events in Ireland and Soctland
as well as to a myriad of local workshops, open days, seminars and other
events across Europe.
- Every month some 10,000 visitors use the European
Telework Online website to help their decision making about
telework, teletrade and telecooperation.
- ETD's announcement and discussion
lists reach subscribers in 34 countries with news of important
developments and successful initiatives.
- ETD is developing a Europe-wide network
of web sites at which existing and potential customers will
be able to find information and help in each European language.
- We are working on a Teleworking Handbook, based on
a very successful model created by the UK Telework, Telecentres and Telecottages
Association, and which will become available in multiple languages during
1997.
