European Telework Development
Message from Martyn Bond, Head of UK Office, European Parliament
This message was posted on behalf of Martyn Bond following the online seminar
on Economic and Monetary Union run by the UK Citizens Online Democracy initiative
with support from the Parliament and with participation by a number of Members
of the Parliament.
The European Telework Development Initiative (ETD) also supported the seminar,
which marked the launch of the UK Citizens Online Democracy Initiative,
by participating in the design and planning of the seminar. A member of
the ETD management team acted as discussion coordinator (chair).
I am
writing to thank all those who took part in the online discussion on Economic
and Monetary Union supported by the European Parliament UK Office at the
UK Citizens Online Democracy website in November and December 1996.
Europe was the cradle of the democratic idea and European countries - especially
the United Kingdom - have been the source of most of the democratic principles
and practices we take for granted today. As we enter the information society
it is vital that Europe's citizens and their democratic representatives
take full advantage of the new methods that are becoming available in order
to strengthen our democratic institutions and enhance the quality and extent
of their dialogue with the citizen.
I very much appreciate the effort that was involved both by the organisers
and helpers and the discussion participants. Online discussion is a complete
novelty for most people and its always difficult to make time for the effort
to learn something new - especially when one is unsure of the outcome.
I would also like to congratulate those who have played a part in launching
this pioneering venture of discovery. In years to come I have no doubt that
we will be using online democracy tools and taking them as much for granted
as we now take for granted print and broadcast media, telephones and faxes
in transmitting the information people need to make their informed choices.
The European Parliament UK Office will continue to take a lively interest
in UK Citizens Online Democracy and its development and looks forward to
active involvement in future debates involving Members of the European Parliament.
A first step will be to put a report on the EMU seminar on the website shortly.
Yours sincerely
Martyn Bond
