Notes:
And the gap for self employed is even larger - the country with most self-employed people has more than four times as much self employment than the one with least self-employed.
I’ve highlighted information workers here, because in the present stage of technology evolution they are the obvious candidates for telework. If the proportion of information workers in a national economy is more than 50% and growing then telework is an important part of the national information society strategy. But if the proportion is only one quarter and more static, clearly this commands less attention.
Two further points should be noted. First that within each country similar variations apply, pointing the need for differentiated regional and local strategies. The country as a whole may have fifty per cent information workers, but one city may have as high as 80% while a rural area of the same country may have fewer than 20%.
Second, with the accession of the new member states, differences between countries increase by - in most cases - an order of magnitude. This is specially true, for example, in per capita GDP, and employment in agriculture.
