In every one of these measures the USA doesn’t have only a little more than Europe - they usually have twice as much. Its sometimes said that this is a short term lead - that the USA is “two or three years ahead” - as if the simple passing of time will put us on an equal footing.
That just isn’t true. What stands out particularly is that the USA not only has a higher investment today - twice as much - but has invested more, year on year, for more than thirty years, and continues to invest much more, year on year. So if anything the gap between Europe and the USA in these basic technologies of the Information Society is widening rather than narrowing.
