And first, the good news. Telework now seems to have achieved lift off in Europe, with the Commission’s status report suggesting that the total numbers of teleworkers grew from two millions in 1997 to four millions in 1998 - a very healthy rate.
This reflects the fact that in several countries a long period of discussion and evaluation has at last resulted in acceptance that for many people and companies it is both attractive and productive to spend some time in some kind of teleworking.
It also reflects the quite rapid growth in use of data communications stemming from widespread promotion and use of the Internet.
