European Telework Development (ETD)

An Initiative supported by the European Commission (DGXIII) as part of the Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) Programme.

This European Telework Online website, providing information, ideas, connections and discussion covering aspects of telework, teletrade (e-commerce) and telecooperation has been developed with considerable support from the ETD Initiative. It provides sections addressing:

• Telework
• Teletrade or E-commerce
• Telecooperation

• A resources database of more than 1,000 items relating to our key topics
• A large collection of frequently asked questions (FAQs)
• A list of recent news items
• An events calendar
• A site contents page
• E-mail based discussion of telework and related topics, with a web-based archive of the discussion
• Presentations about telework, local economic development, e-business and the information society

The European Telework Development initiative started in 1996 and has been Europe's main programme to promote awareness and understanding or teleworking, telecommuting and related topics.

The approach of the ETD initiative has been to promote the successful use of telework (telecommuting) and the closely related techniques of teletrade (including e-commerce) and telecooperation as key elements of economic growth, prosperity and enhanced work opportunities, while recognising and responding to the issues and challenges of an Information Society as well as to its promises.

The main ETD Initiative has now been completed (January 2000) but support for telework from the European Commission continues, as summarised in the European Telework Agenda. This European Telework Online site and its many services continues to be developed and enhanced.
